Conditions and Treatments

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
A long-term condition where the kidneys gradually lose function over time. Early detection and management are key to preserving kidney function and preventing complications.
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
A sudden decline in kidney function, often reversible with prompt treatment. Causes include infections, dehydration, or certain medications.
Obstructive Kidney Disease
Blockages in the urinary tract prevent proper drainage, leading to swelling and damage. Prompt removal is critical to avoid long-term harm.
End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
Final stage of CKD where kidneys no longer function on their own. Patients require dialysis or a kidney transplant.
Diabetic Nephropathy
Kidney damage from long-term high blood sugar in diabetes. A leading cause of CKD and ESRD. Tight control of blood sugar and blood pressure helps slow progression.
Electrolyte Imbalances
Disruptions in minerals like sodium, potassium, or calcium can cause serious complications. Careful monitoring and treatment help restore balance.
Proteinuria
Excess protein in urine, an early sign of kidney damage. Identifying and managing it early can prevent further deterioration.
Hematuria
Blood in the urine, which may indicate infection, stones, or kidney disease. Proper evaluation helps determine the cause and guide treatment.
Hemodialysis
Uses a machine to filter waste from the blood when kidneys fail. Usually performed at a center multiple times a week.
Peritoneal Dialysis
A home-based dialysis using the peritoneal membrane to clean the blood. Offers more independence and flexibility.
Home Hemodialysis
Dialysis done at home, allowing flexible scheduling and potentially better quality of life compared to in-center treatment.
Kidney Genetic Diseases
Inherited conditions such as polycystic kidney disease and Alport syndrome that impact kidney function. We offer genetic testing, including the Renasight® panel, which analyzes over 300 genes associated with kidney disease, to help guide diagnosis and family counseling.
Renal Replacement (Transplant)
Kidney transplant offers improved quality of life and survival for many with ESRD. Requires lifelong follow-up and immunosuppressive medications.
Minimal Change Disease
Common cause of nephrotic syndrome in children, responds well to steroids. Rare in adults but can occur. Close monitoring prevents relapses.
Post-Infectious Glomerulonephritis
Often follows strep infections, causing glomeruli inflammation and hematuria. Most children recover fully; adults may need closer monitoring.
Lupus Nephritis
Kidney involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus, requiring immunosuppressants and careful monitoring. Early treatment greatly improves outcomes.
Resistant Hypertension
High blood pressure uncontrolled despite multiple medications. May indicate underlying kidney disease or hormonal causes requiring advanced evaluation.
Recurrent UTIs
Frequent urinary infections may signal kidney or anatomical issues. Preventive strategies include lifestyle changes and sometimes low-dose antibiotics.
Kidney Stones
Hard deposits that cause pain or blockages. Prevention includes hydration and diet changes. Some cases require surgical removal.
Anemia in CKD
Caused by reduced erythropoietin production. Leads to fatigue and weakness. Managed with iron, vitamins, or injections stimulating red cell production.
Renal Osteodystrophy
Bone disease from imbalanced calcium and phosphate in CKD. Can cause bone pain and fractures. Managed with medications and diet adjustments.
Nutrition Education
We provide personalized nutrition education and counseling to help you make kidney-friendly dietary choices that support better overall health and slow disease progression.

Visit a Nephrologist if You Have:

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure

High blood pressure can damage blood vessels in the kidneys over time, reducing their ability to filter waste and regulate fluid and electrolytes, leading to chronic kidney disease.

Diabetes

Diabetes

Diabetes can damage the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys, reducing their ability to filter waste properly. Over time, this can lead to diabetic nephropathy and chronic kidney disease.

Swelling

leg swelling

In chronic kidney disease (CKD), the kidneys can’t remove excess fluid and salt effectively, causing fluid to build up in the body. This leads to swelling (edema), often seen in the legs, ankles, feet, or around the eyes.

Foam in Urine

Foamy urine can be a sign of excess protein in the urine (proteinuria), which may indicate kidney damage or disease, as healthy kidneys normally prevent significant protein loss.

Abnormal Kidney Labs

abnormal labs

Abnormal kidney labs, such as elevated creatinine, BUN, or low eGFR, suggest reduced kidney function. These changes can indicate damage affecting the body’s ability to filter waste and balance fluids.

Family History of Kidney Disease

Family history of kidney disease

Family history of kidney disease increases risk for inherited conditions like polycystic kidney disease or Alport syndrome. Early screening helps with detection and prevention or treatment.

Clinical Research in Houston, TX

Advancing Medical Research and Innovation

We are proud to lead in medical research and innovation, offering clinical trials to improve the lives of patients with chronic and complex conditions. One key study, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Stage V Chronic Kidney Disease (on dialysis), found that Renadyl® may help support healthy kidney function. Many participants who used Renadyl for three months or more experienced stable or even improved eGFR.

Our research doesn’t stop there,  we’re also studying GLP-1 medications, stem cell therapies, and other promising treatments for kidney health, metabolic support, and inflammation. All trials follow strict, pharma-grade protocols to ensure safety and scientific integrity. If you’re interested in learning more or seeing if you qualify, please contact our office today.
